History

Duck River Garden Club of Old Lyme was founded in 1970 by Priscilla Bayreuther Swanson and a group of friends. The club met at St. Ann’s Episcopal Church on the second Monday of September 1969, and elected officers, planned programs for the year and had articles written for The Day and Hartford Courant newspapers.

The club met under the name “Old Lyme Garden Club” for almost one year before deciding to join The Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut. The local newspapers frequently confused the Old Lyme Garden Club name with the Lyme Garden Club. The club name was changed to Duck River Garden Club of Old Lyme when it joined the Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut in 1971. Ms. Swanson was the first president, 1969-1971.  The original logo was by John Colton.

The goals of the club are to stimulate a greater interest in gardening and landscaping, to learn the elements of floral design, to create a greater awareness of nature and conservation, and to maintain the beauty of our town.

50th Anniversary Celebrations

Duck River Garden Club will be reaching its 50th Anniversary in 2020. Last year the club formed a new Historical and Special Events Committee. Our committee members have already been hard at work, establishing a relationship with the Old Lyme Historical Society. The Historical Society has agreed to archive DRGC documents and photographs. That process has already begun. Duck River Garden Club, in conjunction with The Historical Society, are in the process of planning special events. An exhibit of historic items from DRGC’s past years will be on display, along with photographs. A linen tea towel fund raiser and a program on “Lost Historical Gardens in Old Lyme are in the works. The Historical and Special Events Committee has planned for the celebrations to begin with the onset of the 2020 year. The January Pot Luck will include invitations to past Duck River Club Members, along with other anniversary festivities. The committee is hard at work planning a special June Dinner Celebration. This will be a very special time for Duck River Garden Club!
