Gardener’s Show and Tell

Overview

This is an interactive program encouraging members who have questions to seek the answers from fellow Club members. It will be an opportunity to share your garden knowledge… what worked well, what did not, favorite tool, “What I’ve always wanted to know.”  In order to jump-start the discussion please send your questions to Kathy Burton prior to the meeting.

Ikebana—The Art of Flowers

Patricia McNelis holds a master certificate in the Ichiyo Art of Ikebana; studied and taught Ikebana in Japan for 10 years

Overview

Patricia will offer us a basic through advanced demonstration of Japanese floral design. She will provide us with the history and principles of Ikebana, moving from basic to more modern designs, which all possess the beauty of simplicity.  Patricia will design five arrangements, and highlight techniques and ideas as she works before our eyes to create these beautiful arrangements.  The arrangements will be raffled off to DRGC members in attendance following the presentation!

Annual combined meeting with the Lyme Garden Club

Overview

This is not your typical lecture!!  In a three-part workshop, Linda will give tips that demonstrate ideas for herbal gifts for friends, family, office staff, acquaintances, and neighbors.  Members will become involved in putting together appetizers to desserts using herbs—great ideas for easy entertaining!   A couple of small herbal arrangements will be made! Linda will prepare packets of handouts including recipes, designs, and other materials. Something for everyone! Come be inspired for an herbal holiday!!

Creating Outdoor Rooms

Overview

Allan will show us the principles of creating space—the vertical, the horizontal—how to modify existing spaces by adding containers, arbors, boundaries, with consideration for the scale and proportion of containers and grading of the landscape.  Most of us have yards and spaces already landscaped and full, but we may be able to glean tricks and knowledge about little things that will help us to take our outdoor spaces to the next level!

Invasive Plants—Law and Lore

Presenter

Linda Clough, DRGC Member, B.A. from UCLA in history, MLS (Library Science) from SCSU, and Doctorate, UCONN School of Law.  She received certification as a Master Gardener in 2011, and went on to receive Advanced Certification in 2013.

Overview

Linda will define what an invasive plant is, and make us aware of the Connecticut General Statute covering their sale and propagation. She will talk about invasive plant habits, habitat, and address some remedial measures. In her talk, Linda hopes to emphasize why propagation of native species is important to the general environment. Linda will discuss the findings presented at the seminar given by UCONN’s Invasive Plant Working Group in October 2016.

Designing with Containers/Pots

**FIELD TRIP**

Onsite at Smith Acres.  Carpooling can be arranged. The workshop will start at 6:30 p.m., and a short business meeting will follow. Arrive prior to 6:30 p.m. if purchasing a container there. Bring your gloves and your trowel!

Overview

At this hands-on workshop, you will learn to create beautiful containers/pots and fill them with flowers of your choice.  You’re welcome to bring your own container or find one at the shop for purchase (20% discount). Select from an assortment of easy care plants for your container. Plants will be sold to members at a 1% discount for each member in attendance (25 people=25% off !!) Teri will tell us how to care for the plants we choose!
