Fundraising & Donations

Annual Plant Sale & Garden Fair

This event involves each and every member of the club in its success, and offers fine plants and planting advice from our experienced gardeners for the greater community. The profits are used to support the club’s projects listed on page 7. This is the club’s only fundraiser. In 2018, $8,300.00 was raised. In 2019, the sale will be held on Mother’s Day weekend, Friday May 10th and Saturday May 11th.

Financial Support

Support is given to organizations when it is determined that the organization furthers the aims of the club. In 2017-18, $1,345.00 was donated. Each year possible recipients are presented, reviewed, and determined by the board, dependent upon the success of our fundraising activities.

Scholarship

Since 1980 Duck River Garden Club has awarded at least one scholarship per school year to deserving high school seniors who reside in Lyme or Old Lyme.  Applying students must study horticulture, agriculture, botany, landscape design, environmental studies, ecology or related fields of study. In 2014, the club voted to increase the amount to $1500. DRGC scholarship applications are due in mid-April each spring. Following interviews by the scholarship committee, recipients are selected and announced in May. Applications are on file with guidance offices at LOLHS and The Williams School in New London.  If there are no graduating seniors eligible in a given year, the scholarship may be offered to the previous year’s recipient to assist in his/her sophomore year providing he/she has good academic standing, and is continuing in a related field of study.  Or, if no eligible applicants apply, the scholarship may be offered to a deserving college student who is currently studying in one of the required fields. Our 2018 scholarship was awarded to Samantha Barretta, Lyme, CT.  The LOLHS graduate has been accepted at University of Connecticut to major in Animal Science.
